Taking Tapas to America
A chef from the beautiful region of Asturias in north west Spain has won a prestigious award in America. José Andrés, 41, has been credited with making tapas popular in the USA.
He won the top award handed out each year by the James Beard Foundation.
José began his culinary career as a young chef in the kitchens of the famous El Bulli restaurant, under the guidance of Ferran Adria.
José moved to the United States in 1990 and went on to open some high profile restaurants in Washington, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
He now also has restaurants across the USA under the name of Jaleo, serving traditional Spanish tapas.
He is a well known host of cookery programmes on Spanish and American television, where he has demonstrated his so called molecular gastronomy techniques.
On receiving the award he said: "I feel like I am an ambassador bringing the food of Spain to America and to the world."
