Tiny shop in the running for top award
Leon’s Deli in Presteigne is a winning deli !
Leon’s Deli Presteigne has just heard that it has been judged as one of the top 10 delis in the UK and the winner in Wales. It is now up for the title of Deli Of The Year 2011.
The Deli of the Year competition is organised by Olives Et Al, an artisan food producer in Dorset, as a way of supporting delis across the country. The judges, a panel of experts from the food industry including buyers, retailers and journalists, convened at Fortnum & Mason London to judge over 120 delis (from a total of over 400 nominations) and the regional finalists were announced after much debate.
Deli customers were asked to submit votes in writing or online stating why they wanted their deli to become Deli of the Year. Judging was based on customer comments and the submission made by the deli themselves about their ethos, policies and community involvement.
Now, Leon’s Deli will go forward to the finals but not until an unannounced mystery shopper has visited and scored the deli for helpfulness, knowledge, quality of products stocked, customer service and above all ‘deli attitude’. Finally, the winner will be announced at the coveted food ‘Oscars’ of the fine food world which will take place in London on September 5th.
Joanna Griffiths, owner and manager who runs Leon’s Deli with Leon Abecasis, founder of Leon’s Handmade Sauces, said “We are a tiny shop in a small town and didn’t think we stood a chance in a national competition, so we are stunned and overwhelmed to be judged the winner in Wales. At Leon’s, we have built a good rapport with many of our customers and we are humbled when they tell us we are an asset to the town and they want us to flourish. We want to thank all our customers who voted in the competition and for their support throughout the year.”
Opened in May 2010 Leon’s Deli specialise in fine foods from Spain, Wales and the Marches. The shop is filled with delicious foods, many sourced from award-winning small producers in Wales and the neighbouring counties of Herefordshire and Shropshire, as well as deli classics from Spain, Italy, France and Greece.
